Rule 1 - Life is not fair to get used to it
Yes life is not fair. Why would you want to teach children that it is. I am glad that life is not fair because that means I don't have to have what my neighbor or friends have. I don't have to demand the same rights and experiences that they get. For example, if they wear glasses and I don't, the child fairness mentality would mean I can demand glasses too. Since fairness for most people means everyone must get the same thing, same opportunity, same rights and privileges, even same treatment and respect. So I can ask for my pair of glasses too? That is absurd. We ought to teach children to be content even when mistreated. Unfairness is a perspective of the heart. Perspective of unfairness only come from discontentment with life. Be glad that your neighbor is more respected, more successful, and has more glasses than you. But from Bill Gates tailing comments, it implies that in a perfect world life would be" fair" and because we do not live in a perfect world but a fallen world so life is unfair. So live with it. But life is not fair even in a perfect world. But in a perfect world our perspective would allow us to say everyone did get what they deserved and that is okay with me. And for good reasons not bad as most adults think. Yes life is "unfair" in a perfect world too but it would not be unjust. In an imperfect world, however, injustice tends to follow unfairness attitudes and it is easy to use this unfairness reality to overlook the resulting injustice or to be unjust ourselves. On the one hand, we need to not demand too much, while on the other, we need to accept human frailty, and exercise our compassion. Because of this, when there are moments when we can act fairly we ought. Getting use to unfairness would mean it is okay to overlook injustice. Yes life is unfair, do something about it, not get use to it. Either fix the injustice or change your attitude or perspective. Then life is not as unfair as adults keep saying. Never get use to it.
